The Charles Dickens Museum occupies 48 Doughty Street, the Georgian terraced house where the novelist lived with his young family in the late 1830s. The historic house is furnished as a Victorian middle-class home, so visitors walk through rooms such as the dining room, the nursery and the study as they might have looked when the family lived there. Families can pick up a free audio guide narrated by a hedgehog character and follow a women's history trail suited to children aged five and over. There are also young explorer activities that can be printed at home. Temporary exhibitions, seasonal events and a tearoom add to the visit. The house has several staircases across five floors, so it suits older children and adults best, and buggies are not taken into the historic rooms.
