Rocks by Rail is an outdoor living museum spread across about 19 acres of reclaimed ironstone quarry near Oakham. Families can see steam and diesel quarry locomotives at work, take a ride in a traditional brake van along the line, and watch volunteers restoring engines and rolling stock in the conservation workshop. An exhibition centre explains how ironstone was dug and carried by rail in Rutland, and a quarry viewing area shows diggers and a dragline up close. A nature trail follows the railside towards the remains of the old Oakham Canal, giving children a walk with something to spot. Some days offer the chance to drive a diesel locomotive for a small extra fee. A café serves food on open days, and the site has free car parking. Operating days are seasonal, so families should check the dates before setting out.
Seasonal: viewing days roughly 25 March to 28 October plus operating Sundays and bank holidays; closed in winter.
