A 405-hectare nature reserve in the Broads National Park where 28 species of dragonfly have been spotted and wading birds thrive in vast numbers. The grazing marshes, fens and peat pools are home to water voles, fen raft spiders, southern marsh orchids in early summer, reed warblers, marsh harriers and hobby birds. Bird hides dot the reserve for birdwatching. Two wheelchair-friendly trails (Sprat's Water and Share Marsh) lead through the landscape; mobility scooter hire is available. The visitor centre has a café serving hot food and lunches, a shop stocking wildlife gifts and Viking binoculars, and a Discovery Room available for hire. There is an outdoor play area, picnic spots and a 5k running route.

- Can I get a buggy round Carlton Marshes?
- Yes, the reserve is buggy friendly. Sprat's Water and Share Marsh trails are wheelchair-accessible, and mobility scooters are available for hire to access parts of the reserve.
- Is there somewhere to eat, or should we bring a picnic?
- There's a café serving hot drinks, fresh lunches and baked treats with views over the marshes, plus a picnic area if you prefer to bring your own food.
- Which ages get the most out of a visit?
- Carlton Marshes suits everyone from babies to teens. There's an outdoor play area, toddler sessions run during school holidays, and the reserve is excellent for family birdwatching and spotting wildlife like water voles and dragonflies.
- Does it work in bad weather?
- Much of the visit is outdoors on walking trails, though the visitor centre with its café and shop provides shelter. The reserve and car park are open dawn to dusk, so you can choose quieter times, but a wet forecast will limit what you can comfortably do.
- Is there parking, and how far is it from the car park to the main areas?
- Yes, there is plenty of parking available including disabled spaces and EV charging points. The visitor centre and trails are accessible from the car park, with step-free access to the centre itself.
