None of Edward I's mighty coastal fortresses has a more spectacular setting. Castell Harlech crowns a sheer rocky crag overlooking the dunes far below, with the rugged peaks of Eryri (Snowdonia) rising behind it. Completed in just seven years under the guidance of architect Master James of St George, the castle's classic 'walls within walls' design is part of the Castles and Town Walls of King Edward in Gwynedd UNESCO World Heritage Site. Today an incredible floating footbridge lets you enter the castle as its builder intended — for the first time in 600 years — while the famous 'Way from the Sea' path of 108 steps climbs the rock face. Families can explore battlements, towers and spiral staircases, soak up sweeping sea and mountain views, visit the gift shop and grab refreshments. Run by Cadw, the Welsh Government's heritage body.

Four seasonal periods per year (see hoursNote). Winter (1 Nov-28 Feb) hours 10:00-16:00. Closed 24-26 Dec and 1 Jan.
