Beaumaris Castle on Anglesey is famous as the greatest castle never built. Edward I and his architect James of St George designed a fortress of immense size and near-perfect symmetry, with four concentric rings of defence including a water-filled moat with its own dock. The outer walls alone contained 300 arrow loops. Building work petered out by the 1320s, leaving the south gatehouse, six great towers in the inner ward and the Llanfaes gate unfinished, giving the castle its distinctive squat shape. The site forms part of the Castles and Town Walls of King Edward in Gwynedd World Heritage Site. You can walk the wall walks via external stone steps, explore the grassed inner grounds, and visit an on-site exhibition. Picnic tables are available.
