Bircher Common (The Downs) is a National Trust-owned area of lowland heath near Leominster, Herefordshire, adjacent to Croft Castle and Parkland. The common sits on the downs above the villages of Bircher and Yarpole, with open grassland, rolling hills and woodland edges at Oaker and Bircher Coppices.
Families come for the far-reaching views over North Herefordshire and the Welsh Marches, the miles of footpaths and circular walks (including the well-signposted route up from Yarpole used by the Castle & The Common walk), and the freedom of open access common land where children can run, play and fly kites. There is a car park on the common, and the Mortimer Trail and Croft Ambrey hill fort are nearby.
No entry fee - the common is open access land all year. Well-behaved dogs welcome. There are no on-site facilities (cafe, toilets etc.), so bring your own picnic and supplies.
