The Old House Hereford - also known as the Black and White House Museum - is a beautifully preserved 17th-century timber-framed house standing in the heart of Hereford's High Town. Built in 1621 as a butcher's shop and residence on the city-centre Butchers' Row, it is the only surviving house from the original row and has been called 'a perfectly preserved Jacobean timber-framed house'.
Since 1929 it has been a museum of Jacobean life, with faithfully re-created rooms, original 17th-century furniture and everyday items that reveal how people lived, worked and relaxed over 400 years ago. Visitors of all ages can try on replica period clothing and explore the unique details of each room - including testing out an authentic bed from the era. The ground floor has tactile displays and an engaging virtual tour so everyone can experience the journey through history, including visitors unable to use the stairs.
The museum is spread over three floors, with level access on the ground floor and stairs to the upper floors. Entry is free for under 16s and students, making it a brilliant budget-friendly stop in the city centre. There is a museum shop selling postcards, greeting cards and unique gifts crafted by local artisans, plus a regular programme of activities and frequently changing displays. Assistance dogs are welcome, a hearing loop is available at reception, and a downloadable visual story helps neurodiverse children feel comfortable before their visit.
