What’s there

The Wye Valley Walk is a 136-mile long-distance footpath following the course of the River Wye, from the rugged uplands of mid-Wales down to the Severn estuary near Chepstow, passing through Herefordshire along the way. It is a free, open-access walking trail — no ticket or booking needed — and families can enjoy it in short, easy riverside sections as well as multi-day treks. In Herefordshire the route rambles through rolling fields, cider orchards and ancient woodland, linking family-friendly spots including Symonds Yat (famous for its dramatic limestone gorge and hand-pulled ferry), Ross-on-Wye, Fownhope and the cathedral city of Hereford. The Wye Valley National Landscape provides a spectacular finale through the lower Wye gorge. Walkers can stroll at their own pace along flat riverside paths, stop for picnics by the water, watch for riverside wildlife and enjoy views from the hill sections. The official Wye Valley Walk website (wyevalleywalk.org) is maintained by the Wye Valley AONB team, which looks after the route, its waymarking and the free digital walkers' passport.

Choose your season and you could be delighting in blossom laden apple orchards in Spring, savouring wild garlic and bluebell heaven in May, meandering through wildflower meadows in summer, or enjoying golden autumn days walking through ancient woods. Winter’s misty mornings create moody views well worth the effort of wrapping up warm for a Wye Valley ramble.
