The largest Roman amphitheatre in Britain, used for entertainment and military training by the 20th Legion based at the Roman fortress of Deva. Two stone-built amphitheatres occupied the site, differing from each other and from all other British amphitheatres. The first had stairs on the rear wall to access the upper tiers and a small shrine by its north entrance; the second provided seat access via vaulted stairways. Around two-fifths of the site is visible and excavated, with a clear view down to the central theatre area, which is accessed by several steps. Level pavement and footpath surround the visible remains.
