Norton Priory is the most excavated monastic site in Europe, founded in 1134 and achieving abbey status in 1391. The museum displays thousands of objects spanning 900 years of history, from Tudor shoes to a twice life-size St Christopher statue commissioned to mark the abbey's elevation. Visitors can explore the 12th century undercroft with its vaulted ceiling and the priory ruins showing the layout of medieval buildings. The site is surrounded by woodland walks with secret summer houses, sculptures and a stream glade. During summer, the 2.5 acre Georgian Walled Garden opens, featuring orchards, a rose walk, herb garden and the National Collection of Tree Quince. The visitor centre includes a café, shop and accessible facilities.
Summer 2026 (to 2 Nov): Museum 10:00-17:00, Walled Garden 13:00-16:00. Winter 2026 (from 3 Nov): Museum 10:00-16:00, Walled Garden 12:00-15:00.
