Kenilworth Castle spans more than nine centuries, from its massive Norman keep built in the 1120s through a medieval siege in 1266 to its transformation as a showpiece mansion. Robert Dudley, childhood friend of Elizabeth I, spent fortunes from 1563 turning it into a palace to impress the queen. Visitors can climb to the queen's apartments for views across the castle and countryside, then explore the spectacular Elizabethan garden Dudley created for Elizabeth's 1575 visit, which includes a Renaissance aviary, scented plant beds, and an imposing fountain.
