Skye Museum of Island Life

Eight thatched cottages recreate Highland island life as it was at the end of the nineteenth century. The Old Croft House, built over 200 years ago, was lived in until 1957 and shows how families cooked over open fires in smoke-filled interiors — the "Black Houses" — with livestock kept close by for warmth and survival. The museum also includes a blacksmith's workshop, a weaver's cottage where flax and wool were processed into linen and tweed, the local tailor's ceilidh house where men gathered to listen to the wireless and share stories, a shop, and a barn housing traditional farming tools. Each building interprets a different aspect of self-sufficient island life: how people managed without running water or electricity, how women's days centred on domestic work and textile production, how the community relied on the blacksmith as healer and metalworker, and how fishing sustained both food and income.
