Doune Castle is a medieval courtyard castle built as the home of Regent Albany, 'Scotland's uncrowned king'. The castle's architecture reflects Albany's wealth and taste. Inside you can explore the cathedral-like great hall where guests once feasted, and the kitchen and servery where banquets were prepared. The castle grounds include a woodland walk, the site of a Roman fort, and a pedestrian bridge built using local materials and traditional methods. From the castle you can admire views over the River Teith towards the Menteith Hills and Ben Lomond. The castle is a popular filming location, featuring in Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Game of Thrones and Outlander; an audio guide includes commentary from Terry Jones and Sam Heughan.

Closed 25-26 Dec and 1-2 Jan; closes at 14:00 on 24 Dec.
