Dalkeith Country Park is a 1,000-acre country estate in Midlothian, just a few miles from Edinburgh, offering free entry to its parkland and waymarked woodland walks. Families come for the Fort Douglas adventure playground (paid, open daily 10:00-17:00), the Go Ape treetop adventure course, buggy-friendly walking trails like the Wildernesse Walk, and Restoration Yard, a restored stableyard with a store, coffee bar and kid-friendly kitchen restaurant. There is a £4 parking charge. Dogs are welcome on the trails.
