Devenish Island (Daimhinis) is a historic monastic site set on a tranquil island in Lower Lough Erne, near Enniskillen in County Fermanagh. Founded by St Molaise in the 6th century, the monastery flourished as a centre of learning and pilgrimage, eventually becoming one of Ireland's most important ecclesiastical sites. The island features a well-preserved round tower (12th century), the remains of St Molaise's House, a 13th-century Augustinian abbey, and several high crosses and gravestones. Devenish is only accessible by boat, with regular trips running from Enniskillen (April-September) operated by Erne Tours. The island offers a fascinating glimpse into early Christian Ireland and is suitable for families, with plenty of space for children to explore the ruins and enjoy the lakeside scenery. Visitors should wear comfortable footwear for walking on uneven terrain and bring weather-appropriate clothing.
Effectively an April-to-September visit, set by the boat rather than the monument. The Department for Communities keeps the site open and free year-round, but with no bridge the practical season is the Erne Tours timetable, and sailings run only with sufficient numbers. Conservation works can close parts of the site at short notice.
