Hexham Old Gaol is one of the oldest purpose-built prisons in England, completed in 1332. Now a family-friendly museum run by North East Museums, it offers a fascinating look at medieval crime and punishment. Explore the dungeon via a glass lift, learn about the notorious Border Reivers who were imprisoned here, see 15th and 16th-century arms and armour, and even have a go in the stocks. Topics covered include archaeology, archives, costume and textiles, law and order, music, photography, social history, weapons and war. The building is a Grade I listed building. Your ticket is an Annual Pass giving unlimited repeat visits for 12 months.
