Elgin Cathedral stands as one of Scotland's most ambitious medieval buildings, earning the name the 'Lantern of the North'. The 13th-century west front is one of the finest architectural achievements in Scotland. Visitors can step inside the octagonal chapter house, where cathedral clergy met, to see its stone carvings of beasts and faces. The site also holds Scotland's tallest gravestone—5m high and placed against the south choir aisle for the Anderson family—and a rare Pictish cross slab depicting falconry.
