CanalAbility is a registered charity that runs specially adapted broad-beam canal boats on the River Stort, between Harlow and the Hertfordshire countryside. Its boats are built for wheelchair users and people with limited mobility, with ramps, lifts, disabled toilets and centrally heated cabins, so families with a disabled member can share a day on the water together. Each four-hour day hire comes with a qualified volunteer skipper and crew, and visitors can either sit back and watch the wildlife, or have a go at steering and working the locks. The route passes through at least two locks and runs out towards Roydon or Sawbridgeworth. Families can bring a picnic or cook in the boat's galley. The charity also works with mainstream and specialist schools and community groups on waterways activities, so it suits school trips as well as family outings.
