Southsea Castle is a coastal fort on the seafront at Southsea, built by Henry VIII and now run as a museum by Portsmouth City Council. Entry is free, which makes it an easy, low-cost outing for families. Museum displays in the keep cover the castle's history, its role in the Civil War and how the town of Southsea grew up around it. Visitors can climb to the ramparts for views across the water, and there are games and film rooms open during the season. The courtyard holds a cafe that stays open all year, a gift shop and an on-site microbrewery. Much of the castle is reached by stairs, so the keep and ramparts suit visitors who can manage steps, while the courtyard is on one level. The castle is open for only part of the year, so check the seasonal times before setting out.
Museum season April to October; winter opening is courtyard and cafe only.
