Eastney Engine Houses is a pair of Victorian industrial buildings on the eastern edge of the seafront at Eastney, Portsmouth. The Beam Engine House holds two large James Watt and Company beam engines and their pumps, restored to their 1887 condition, which once drained the city's sewage system. The neighbouring Gas Engine House can also be visited. Families can look up at the big machinery, learn how the pumping station worked, and take in the red-brick Victorian architecture. Visits are short and suit older children and history-minded families, and the engines make a good talking point. The site is run by Portsmouth Museum Service with volunteer support. Because it opens only on set days, it works best as an afternoon add-on to a seafront trip, and visitors should check the calendar before travelling.
