The WW1 Remembrance Centre sits in Bastion 6 of the Hilsea Lines in the north-east of Portsmouth, a historic fort building that was restored by volunteers to house a collection of First World War artefacts, reproduction exhibits and memorabilia. Volunteer guides lead visitors through the story of the war with a timeline of unusual and human stories, and older children often enjoy the repro trench system, which gives a sense of what conditions were like for soldiers. The centre is small, so a visit takes about an hour, and it suits families with school-age children and history-minded visitors. There is a library for family history research, a gift shop, and an education programme for schools. Opening is limited to a few weekday afternoons and Sunday, and the team is volunteer-run, so it is worth checking before travelling.
