A small, carefully restored medieval townhouse on French Street in Southampton, looked after by English Heritage. The house was built around 1290 for a wine merchant and combined living quarters, a place of business and a cellar, and its rooms are now furnished with replica medieval pieces. Families can walk through the ground-floor hall and passage, look down into the vaulted undercroft where wine was stored, and climb the steep stairs to the upper bedchamber. Interpretation explains everyday life in the town several centuries ago, and the compact layout makes it easy to picture how a merchant's household worked. A small courtyard garden next to the house has herbs that may have been grown in medieval times, and a limited picnic area is available there. The visit is short, so it suits a quick stop in the city centre or part of a half-day of Southampton history.
