Blue Reef Aquarium Portsmouth sits on the seafront at the tip of Southsea, overlooking the Solent. Families work through a series of themed displays that move from the marine life of British waters to a tropical coral reef, with more than forty displays in total. The centrepiece is a large reef tank with an underwater walk-through tunnel, home to sharks, stingrays and shoals of brightly coloured reef fish. Younger children tend to enjoy the otter holt, the seahorse breeding displays and the feeding talks given by staff, while older children can spot the frogs, cuttlefish and other smaller species in the nursery areas. The building is indoors, so it works as a rainy-day option, and there is a cafe on site.
Questions parents ask
- Is it easy to get round with a buggy and mix of ages?
- The aquarium has step-free access throughout, making it pushchair-friendly for younger children. The indoor setting means you can take your time exploring the exhibits at whatever pace suits your group, with older children able to read the information panels while toddlers watch the animals.
- Is there food, or should we bring a packed lunch?
- There is a café on site, so you don't need to pack a full picnic. However, bringing snacks is always wise if you have young children who need regular top-ups between meals.
- How long should we spend there?
- The visible page does not state a typical visit length, so we haven't confirmed how long most families spend at the aquarium.
- What ages get the most out of it?
- The aquarium is designed for all ages from babies upwards, with interactive exhibits and educational content. Toddlers and preschoolers tend to be captivated by watching the sea creatures, while older children can engage with the conservation information and learn about the animals.
- Does it work in bad weather?
- Being entirely indoors, the aquarium is perfect for rainy days when outdoor attractions are not an option. You can take your time exploring the exhibits whatever the weather outside.
