The D-Day Story is a museum on Southsea seafront that tells the story of the Normandy landings through the personal possessions and recorded words of people who took part. Galleries cover the preparations, the landings and the battle for Normandy, and the visit ends with the Overlord Embroidery, a long hand-stitched series of panels that retells the campaign. Outside stands landing craft tank LCT 7074, which visitors can climb aboard to see the tanks it carried and the displays on board. Galleries use audio-visual displays and fairly low lighting, so younger children may find some areas loud or dim, although ear defenders are available from reception. Interactive displays, touchable models and a quieter embroidery gallery make it suit older children and families interested in history. There is a café on site and a gift shop.
