Butser Ancient Farm is an open-air archaeology site on the South Downs where families can walk among reconstructed houses from several periods, from Neolithic dwellings and Iron Age roundhouses through a Romano-British villa to an early Saxon house. It is run as a research and education centre, so much of what happens on the day is hands-on: visitors can touch the replica tools and thatch, watch crafts such as weaving, meet the farm animals, and attend talks and demonstrations. Goats, sheep and pigs are kept on the working farm, and prehistoric crops are grown. The site suits school groups as well as families with younger children, and there is a shop selling snacks and drinks. Seasonal festivals and events run through the year, and the farm is closed to general visitors over the winter months, so check the events calendar before travelling.
