The Curtis Museum sits on the High Street in Alton and covers around 100 million years of the local area, from fossils and prehistoric tools through Roman and Saxon finds to the English Civil War. The highlight for many visitors is the Anglo-Saxon Alton Buckle, and there are Roman and Saxon burial displays, a hop-growing and brewing section and a story of the Sweet Fanny Adams case. A childhood gallery shows toys and dolls at a height suited to younger visitors, and there are dressing-up costumes, trails and workshops during school holidays. The museum is compact, so it suits a relaxed visit of an hour or so, and it is a common stop for school groups using self-led trail packs. Admission is free, and the sister Allen Gallery is a short walk away.
