Fort Brockhurst is one of the forts built in the 1850s and 1860s to protect Portsmouth and its harbour. It sits on the north side of Gosport and is looked after by English Heritage. Much of the fort is largely unaltered, so families can walk across the parade ground, look at the gun ramps and the moated keep, and see the washrooms and armoury. Visitors can read about the defences and the soldiers who garrisoned the site, and wartime damage from the Second World War is still visible on parts of the structure. The grounds suit a relaxed outdoor visit, and the site is popular for a picnic. Dogs on leads are welcome. The fort also hosts community events and craft fairs through the year, which give younger visitors something livelier to join in with. Because access is limited to certain days, check the venue's own listing before setting out.
Limited open days April to October; check before travelling.
