The New Forest Heritage Centre is a museum run by an independent charity in the village of Lyndhurst, in the middle of the New Forest National Park. Its galleries cover the social and cultural history of the Forest, its traditions and ancient laws, and the conservation of its wildlife and ponies. A highlight is a long embroidery panel that traces the Forest's history over many centuries, and a first-floor gallery holds further displays. Younger visitors have a family fun tree, dressing-up costumes, building bricks and wooden animals, plus museum trails and colouring sheets to pick up in the galleries. The centre also has a café, a gift shop and a reference library, and it runs a programme of family events and workshops through the school holidays. It suits families who want a relaxed indoor stop, especially on a wet day or as a starting point for exploring the Forest.
Closing time is 5pm April to October and 4pm November to March; the grid holds the winter (more restrictive) week.
