Bishop's Waltham Museum is a small, volunteer-run local museum housed in the old farmhouse that was once lodgings for guests of the Bishops of Winchester, in the grounds of the palace ruins. Inside, families can explore objects and archives covering the town and surrounding villages, from prehistoric tools to twentieth-century local items, with a new exhibition each year. The museum sits alongside the palace grounds, which are free to wander and suit children who enjoy ruins, fishponds and open space. It works with local schools and groups, so the displays suit older children and anyone curious about how an ordinary market town has changed. Entry is free, though donations are welcome. Visits are best planned around the weekend opening pattern, and the ground floor is the accessible part of the building. Well-trained dogs are welcome.
