Fort Nelson is a restored Victorian fortress on Portsdown Hill overlooking Portsmouth Harbour, and it houses the Royal Armouries national collection of artillery. Families can walk the ramparts and outer defences, explore the underground tunnels that link the magazines with the gun emplacements, and look round the reconstructed barrack rooms, hospital and kitchen that show how the garrison lived. The galleries hold hundreds of historic cannon, from a medieval bombard to a huge railway gun, and there are guided tours and changing exhibitions. An onsite cafe and open ground for children to run about make it an easy half day or a full day out, and entry to the fort is free.
