Calshot Castle is a compact Tudor artillery fort on a shingle spit where the Solent meets Southampton Water. Built in the reign of Henry VIII as part of a chain of coastal defences, it later served as a coastguard base, a seaplane station and an RAF site before opening to visitors. Children can explore the cylindrical central keep, which rises over three levels, and climb to the top for wide views over the water towards the Isle of Wight. Displays cover the castle's wartime role and its link to the Sunderland flying boat, and a children's activity pack is available with paid admission. The grounds are good for a picnic, and the neighbouring Calshot Activities Centre has a café. The castle is small and open on set dates, so it suits a short, relaxed visit rather than a full day. A moat surrounds the fort, so younger children need close supervision.
