A naval museum on the Gosport shore of Portsmouth Harbour, where the Royal Navy's first submarine, HMS Holland 1, is on show. Launched in 1901 and recovered from the seabed decades later, the boat was restored and placed on display in a gallery that visitors can look into alongside the rest of the collection. The main draw for children is HMS Alliance, a Second World War submarine that visitors step aboard, with working periscopes to look through and a route through the boat to explore. Other exhibits include the X24, a small wartime midget submarine that took part in the D-Day landings, and a Cold War-era display on the Polaris deterrent told through personal accounts. Former submariners often act as guides, which gives older children and history fans a lively way into the story. A memorial garden surrounds the museum building and is free to walk around. Allow around two hours for a visit.
