Petersfield Museum and Art Gallery is housed in the old police station and courthouse on St Peter's Road, in the centre of the market town, and tells the story of Petersfield and the villages around it. Galleries cover archaeology, social history, photography, historic dress and textiles, and paintings by the local artist Flora Twort. The building itself is part of the appeal for children, with a Victorian courthouse and police building to explore. Under-18s go in free, which makes it an easy add-on to a town visit. The courtyard is a pleasant place to pause, and the shop has local history books and gifts for little ones. Most of the site is wheelchair and buggy accessible, with a short stretch where visitors are routed around some stairs. The museum is compact enough to see in an hour or so, and it suits families with curious older children as well as those with younger ones.
Questions parents ask
- Can I manage with a buggy and younger children at the same time?
- We haven't confirmed whether buggies are easy to use throughout the museum, so contact the venue before visiting with a baby and older child together. We do have baby changing facilities and the museum is designed to be accessible.
- How long should we allow for a visit?
- A typical visit takes about 75 minutes, which gives you time to explore the exhibitions and collections without rushing.
- Is there somewhere to eat, or should we bring a picnic?
- We haven't confirmed whether there is a café here, so check with the museum before you visit. There is no confirmed picnic area.
- What activities are there for younger children?
- Mischief Makers runs events for under-5s every Tuesday, and Creative Saturday sessions invite children to take part in activities inspired by the permanent collection and exhibitions.
