All that remains of Winchester Castle is its 13th-century Great Hall, one of the finest surviving medieval halls in England, and it is the setting for the famous Round Table linked to King Arthur. Families can walk the hall, see the stained glass and hammer-beam roof, and relax in Queen Eleanor's Medieval Garden. Nearby, the Westgate Museum occupies a medieval city gateway with a debtors' prison chamber, a Tudor painted ceiling and a rooftop view over the city. The Westgate has hands-on activities for children, including replica armour, Tudor costumes, brass rubbing and a spotter trail. Free guided tours of the hall run through the day, and there is a café on site. The venue suits history-minded children and older pupils visiting the city centre.
