Sawley Abbey

Sawley Abbey is the remains of a Cistercian monastery founded in the twelfth century, now cared for by English Heritage and open to visitors free of charge. The grounds are largely flat and grassy, scattered with low walls and stonework, so younger children have room to wander while adults read the information about monastic life and the Reformation. The site sits beside the River Ribble with hills rising behind it, which suits a relaxed family outing with a picnic on the grass. Parts of the site may be fenced off during an ongoing conservation project, so it is worth checking the current state of the grounds before travelling. Access is limited for some visitors with reduced mobility. Guided tours run on a few set dates through the year and must be booked in advance.
