Moor Park is the oldest and largest park in Preston, a free open-access green space that dates from the 1830s and was improved in the 1860s. Families use it for the two children's play areas and the outdoor gym, while older children tend to head for the skatepark, basketball courts and multi-use games areas. There are paths for walking and cycling, a grotto and decorative garden, and plenty of open grass for running around. The Jeremiah Horrocks Observatory is open to the public at certain times and during special events. A café is on site, and the park runs events through the year, from night-time bat walks to music festivals. It suits a relaxed day out with a picnic, a kickabout and some time on the play equipment.
