Yarrow Valley Country Park is a large open-air park following the River Yarrow, made up of woodland, lakes, old mill lodges and restored industrial land. Families come for the walks, which range from short loops to longer waymarked routes, and for the play area called Yarrow Rocks, which has a giant rope swing, a natural climbing wall, rock stacks, an embankment slide, a basket swing and a sand pit. The café and information centre at Birkacre is a useful base, and the lodges are good for spotting waterbirds. Some areas of the play space are designed for older children, so younger ones need close watching. Dogs must be kept on a lead in the play area. The park is run by Chorley Council.
Work is under way at the reservoir (council update, December 2025); check before travelling.
Questions parents ask
- Is Yarrow Rocks playground manageable with both a toddler and an older child?
- The play space is designed to challenge older users with features like a giant rope swing, natural climbing wall and embankment slide. Parents and carers should take particular care to watch toddlers, as some attractions are aimed at older children.
- Is there food at the park, or should we bring a picnic?
- Treeface Café serves drinks, cakes, snacks, homemade meals and ice cream. Alternatively, you're welcome to bring a picnic and dispose of litter in the bins provided.
- How long should we allow for a visit?
- Yarrow Valley is a 700-acre facility with numerous walking routes available as guides, so the length of visit depends on which areas you explore. Most families spend at least a few hours between the play area, walks and café.
- Will a rainy day ruin the visit?
- Yarrow Rocks and the walking trails are outdoor attractions, so heavy rain will limit what you can do. However, the information centre and café at Birkacre offer some shelter and refreshment options.
