Eyemouth Museum occupies the Auld Kirk in the centre of the town and covers the fishing and social history of the Berwickshire coast. The centrepiece is a large embroidered tapestry, made by local women, that commemorates the great fishing disaster of 1881. Nearby, a moving installation of clay figures wrapped in shrouds recalls the men who were lost at sea. A virtual reality tour takes visitors around Eyemouth Fort as it stood in the sixteenth century, which tends to hold the attention of older children. There is a first-floor gallery with changing exhibitions on local themes, a gift shop and a visitor information point. Accompanied children go free, and the museum runs education visits for schools and groups. It suits a rainy afternoon, a history-minded family or a stop on a coastal day out.
