Mellerstain House is a Georgian family home in the Scottish Borders, built in two stages to designs by William Adam and his son Robert Adam. Guided tours take visitors through the principal rooms, with plasterwork, period furniture and paintings from several centuries, and a guide explains the history of the building. Outside, the terraced formal garden looks across to the Cheviot Hills, and paths lead down to a lake and woodland. Families can let younger children run on the wide lawns, use the playground and stop for lunch or cake in the courtyard café. Children under 16 are admitted free, so it suits a relaxed outing where grown-ups enjoy the house and the children have space to move about. The house has a limited season, so check the current dates before travelling.
House open by guided tour mid-April to end September on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays; grounds open year round.
