Ferniehirst Castle is a historic tower house in the Jed Valley, set in forest and overlooking the River Jed. Its history runs through border warfare, sieges and a 16th-century rebuild, and the restored interior includes a Great Hall, a kitchen, a turret library and a nursery. The castle is still a family home for the Kerr family and is also rented out as holiday accommodation and used for weddings, so public visiting is limited. Guided castle tours are offered on certain days, and the public opening has traditionally been in July around the local Jethart festival. Families interested in castles and Scottish history may find it worth an enquiry before travelling, and the surrounding woodland and tennis court suit an outing if the grounds are open. Check ahead before planning a visit.
