Newburgh Priory is a family home set in roughly forty acres of landscaped gardens just outside the village of Coxwold in the Howardian Hills. The house grew out of an Augustinian priory founded in the twelfth century, and visitors can join guided tours of its rooms, which hold family portraits and fine porcelain, and hear about its legends, including the tomb said to hold Oliver Cromwell. Outside there is a lake, a sunken water garden, a walled cottage garden, clipped topiary yews and woodland paths to wander. Children have plenty of space to run and explore, and the grounds suit a relaxed afternoon out. The house and gardens open only on a limited seasonal pattern, so families should check dates before travelling. Plant fairs and a Christmas tree sale also bring visitors to the estate during the year.
Short season because the house is still a family home; Flower Power plant fairs in April and August and a December Christmas fair.
