What’s there
- Dogs welcome
Only facilities we’ve confirmed are listed — anything missing here we simply haven’t checked, rather than know to be absent.
Whitby Marine Discovery Centre sits on the working harbourside at Whitby, in a converted fish market building on Pier Road. The centre is home to the Whitby Lobster Hatchery, and its five tanks show more than thirty species of native sea creatures such as cod, crabs, lobsters and starfish. Families can see juvenile lobsters at the hatchery exhibition and learn how the charity raises and releases them to support the local fishing community. The visit is compact, so it suits a rainy afternoon or a break between harbour walks, and older children often enjoy the detail on the lobster life cycle. The centre is run by a registered marine conservation charity, and its visitor information says well-behaved dogs are welcome. Check the opening pattern before travelling, as the centre is open daily during school holidays and may keep shorter hours at other times.
Questions parents ask
- Can we bring our dog?
- Yes, well behaved dogs are welcome at the centre.
- How long should we allow for a visit?
- The page does not state how long a typical visit lasts, so this depends on how much time your children want to spend with the 30 species of native marine life across the 5 tanks.
- Is there a café or should we bring food?
- We haven't confirmed whether there is a café at the centre, so you may want to check by phone or bring a picnic to be safe.
