The Cerne Giant is an ancient naked figure cut into the chalk hillside above Cerne Abbas, a village a short drive north of Dorchester. Families come to look up at the figure from a viewing area beside the car park, and a gentle quarter-mile signposted footpath from the village centre leads to the same viewpoint, so it suits a short countryside walk as much as a quick stop. Children tend to enjoy the legends and the big-picture scale of the carving, and the surrounding chalk grassland is managed for wildlife. Access onto the figure itself is restricted to protect the chalk, so the visit is a viewing and walking one rather than a play destination. Dogs are welcome on leads, and the grassy slopes can become muddy after rain, so sturdy footwear is worth bringing.
