The Fine Foundation Wild Seas Centre is a small marine visitor centre run by Dorset Wildlife Trust on the Jurassic Coast at Kimmeridge Bay. Inside, families can look into aquaria, use interactive displays and learn about the creatures that live in the bay's rockpools and seaweed beds. Outside, the shore is a short walk away, so a visit pairs well with rockpooling and beachcombing between the tides. From May to September the bay has a marked snorkel trail for confident swimmers, and staff at the centre can advise on conditions and hire out a mask and snorkel. There is a gift shop and a picnic area on site. It suits a relaxed half-day for families with children of mixed ages who enjoy wildlife and the seaside.
Seasonal centre: summer opening only. Snorkel trail May to September. Limited beach access in winter.
Questions parents ask
- Is the beach and centre accessible with a buggy or young children?
- Access to the Wild Seas Centre is along a narrow, sloping and uneven path, and the terrain around Kimmeridge Bay is uneven, so sturdy footwear is advisable. We haven't confirmed whether buggies are practical for this visit. The cliff paths are steep in places and rockpools are slippery and uneven.
- Is there anywhere to eat, or should we bring a picnic?
- We haven't confirmed a café at the centre. There is a picnic area on site, so bringing your own food is a good option.
- How long should we allow for a visit?
- A typical visit lasts around 90 minutes, though this depends on whether you explore the rockpools, visit the aquaria and interactive displays, or try the snorkel trail if you're a confident swimmer.
- Does the snorkel trail operate in all seasons?
- The snorkel trail is only in place from May to September each year, and should only be used in clear, calm sea conditions during neap tides. It should be avoided after heavy rain or strong winds as visibility will be limited.
