The Cow and Calf Rocks are a pair of millstone grit formations on Ilkley Moor, above the spa town of Ilkley. The larger outcrop and the smaller boulder beside it are said to look like a cow and her calf, and the legend behind the name is a favourite with children. A short walk up from the car park brings you to the rocks, with views over the town and the Wharfe Valley. Older children often enjoy clambering over the exposed stone, while climbers use the old quarry nearby. A waymarked heritage walk leads from the rocks to quieter parts of the moor and to carved stones from the Bronze Age. The moor is open access, so there is no entry charge and no set opening hours, and the ground is rough and can be muddy after rain.
