Shipley Glen is an open-access stretch of ancient oak woodland, rocky crags and heathland that drops steeply from Baildon Moor. It is a free, all-year place for families to walk, explore and spot woodpeckers, with the rocks and paths giving children plenty to climb and discover. The glen was once a Victorian pleasure ground with rides and amusements, and the Shipley Glen Tramway, Britain's oldest working cable-hauled tramway, still carries visitors up through the trees on weekends and some holidays. Bracken Hall Countryside Centre sits at the edge of the glen with displays on local natural history and archaeology, and runs activities for families. The site is part of the Bradford Pennine Gateway National Nature Reserve. Paths and slopes are uneven in places, so sturdy footwear suits the walks best.
