Uffington Castle is an Iron Age hillfort on the summit of White Horse Hill in the Vale of White Horse. The site sits beside the Ridgeway National Trail and shares its chalk downland with the Uffington White Horse, a prehistoric hill figure cut into the slope, and with Dragon Hill, a natural mound linked to the legend of St George. There are no standing ruins; what remains are large grassy ramparts and a ditch to walk around, with far-reaching views across the countryside on a clear day. Families often combine it with a stroll up to the horse and the long barrow at Wayland's Smithy nearby. The ground is uneven and can be muddy after rain, and sheep graze the hillside, so sturdy footwear and dogs on leads are worth planning for. It suits older children who enjoy walking, history and open space.
