Wellington Arch is a Decimus Burton triumphal arch standing on the traffic island at Hyde Park Corner in central London, a short walk from Apsley House. Built to celebrate victory over Napoleon at Waterloo, it is now looked after by English Heritage and opened to visitors. Inside, several floors hold a history of the arch, temporary exhibitions and changing displays of contemporary art, and children tend to enjoy climbing up to the open-air viewing balconies for views across Hyde Park, Green Park and the gardens of Buckingham Palace. The large bronze group on the roof, Peace Descending on the Quadriga of War, gives older children something to talk about. The visit is short and suits a family combining it with nearby sights in the area. English Heritage also runs school visits to the site.
