The University of Dundee Botanic Garden covers around nine and a half hectares on the banks of the River Tay, close to Dundee Airport. Families can wander wide paths past collections of trees and shrubs, tropical and temperate glasshouses, herb and water gardens, and a sensory garden with a storytelling area. The Garden of Evolution is one of the themed areas: it walks visitors through how plants developed from early lichens and mosses to flowering plants, and it has dry-stone walling to look at. Guided and self-guided trails are available on site, and the garden runs school programmes linked to the curriculum. It suits a relaxed outing for all ages, with plenty of benches for a rest and views over the river.
