Montrose Basin is an enclosed estuary covering 750 hectares of tidal mudflats. In autumn and winter, over 100,000 migratory birds roost here including pink-footed geese, wigeon and waders; spring and summer bring breeding colonies of sand martins, common terns and eider. The visitor centre has panoramic views across the reserve with telescopes and binoculars available, hot drinks, and a small wildlife-themed gift shop. Children's activities are always available in the centre. Self-guided audio tours are available through izi.TRAVEL. Several access points lead onto the reserve walks; the visitor centre is wheelchair accessible and dogs are allowed on the walks.
1 November to mid-February: open Friday-Monday, 10:30am-4pm. The visitor centre has restricted opening hours during the winter.
